A MESSAGE FROM THE ORGANISERS: From left: Robert Hyde; Mike Hyde; Robin Hampton (Hampton Honda Christchurch); Gavin Sargent The inaugural TT2000 is over. For the riders who completed over 2,000 kms in 48 hours the ointment is starting to work, you have priced up a new set of tyres, celebrated a retrospective Valentines Day and made a mental note to research radar detectors on the net for the next time you ride over Lindis Pass. We were absolutely delighted with the response to our event and very much appreciated the positive comments on how you found the running of it. Without a doubt this looks set to become an annual outing and we are spurred on to run it again, with a varied route but keeping the same concept, in February 2010. Sales of the Achievers Packs and Flyer trophies more or less covered our costs so we thank all riders for making that spend. We give thanks for no major casualties. When you consider the total kilometres ridden by all participants over the weekend, estimated at over 140,000kms, in varying weather, this absence of offs is a testimony to the sheer riding skill of the entrants. There were the unlucky mechanical hiccups from chains to tyres to fairing bolts. It hit a few riders more severely in the pocket than they expected but the people of New Zealand thank you if not your demerit tally. The bikes spanned all brands and types from 250s to 1800s. Two Gold Flyer bikes carried pillions. Riders came from Whangarei to Bluff, and the extra commuting kilometres may have made some weekend mileages run over 3,000 kms. On the other hand it got you out of mowing the lawn. Finally the lasting memory we have of the weekend is the great camaraderie that sprung up over the two days. From riders helping out fuel-less bikes on the roadside to pillioning their mate the remaining 700kms to the finish after a breakdown, it was an awesome thing to observe. Our thanks to the following checkpoint crew, all family, who worked for nothing except a free sausage and the chance to see a lot of middle aged guys in leather: From left: Elyse Dowie (Achiever Pack sales); Sophie Hyde (Scrutineering); Sandy Hyde (Scrutineering) On right: Carol Sargent (Achiever Pack sales) Robin Hampton, Honda dealer in Christchurch who supported the TT2000 with use of his premises, coffee, tools and time from 5:30am to 11:00pm both days. We let him eat some of our fish & chips on Saturday night while we waited for bikes to come in, so it wasn't all one way. The Brown family operated a sausage sizzle to fund-raise for the girls' trip to Vietnam. Kevin is pictured here observing the spectacle of 64 bikes parked on the forecourt of Hamptons and tossing up whether to make Robin Hampton an offer for the Fireblade on the showroom floor. We hope to see you all again this time next year for the TT2000 South Island 2010 event. With our congratulations for an outstanding ride, 100% safety record and success in this endurance event, it has been a pleasure running it for you. Mike Hyde, Gavin Sargent, Robert Hyde |
